Safety is in your hands |
every time you dig |
Whether you’re planting a tree, installing a fence, or building a backyard patio, remember to call 811 before the start of any digging project to have underground public utility lines marked.
Utility lines can be buried inches below the surface, and even simple digging projects can lead to major damage. Every few minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone started a digging project before calling 811.*
Prevention is key:
- CALL 811 at least three business days before digging for any project. You will be connected to New Jersey One Call. Representatives will be sent to mark the locations of underground lines with flags and paint, free of charge. Digging must begin within 10 business days after the mark is requested. Marks expire after 45 business days.
- CHECK to see if your contractor has called 811. Don’t allow work to begin if the lines aren’t marked and don’t assume they have called.
- RESPECT the marks, and dig around them (not on them). Always carefully hand dig within two feet of marked lines.
Customers, contractors or excavators who do not call 811 are liable for costs associated with any damage and repair. Before you begin an outdoor project, call 811 to avoid injury, costly fines, repairs and outages. |
