PSE&G’s Summer Relief Initiative lessens impact of higher electric costs

PSE&G continues to work hard to address the June 1, 2025, electric supply rate increase and provide customers with relief on their electric bills.

While PSE&G is not the cause of the 17% rise in electric rates that resulted from the PJM capacity price auction, we remain committed to working with policymakers regarding long-term solutions to these substantial rate increases. These solutions may include more power generation to address the energy supply-demand imbalance that we have been warning about for several years.

In the short-term, we understand that the increased electric supply rates, along with the increased usage that often comes with hot weather, will have an impact on household budgets, and we are taking significant steps to support our customers. Detailed below are specific measures of PSE&G’s Summer Relief Initiative that helps protect residential electric customers from higher costs this summer.

  • We are proactively implementing a Summer Moratorium beginning July 1, which is an expansion of the Winter Termination Program. The moratorium provides utility shut-off protection to low-income and vulnerable individuals and will continue until September 30.
  • PSE&G will waive all residential reconnection fees from July 1 through September 30.
  • To help individuals and families manage their energy costs as the weather gets warmer and electricity usage hits its peak, PSE&G will apply a credit of $30 to residential electric bills in both July and August 2025. During this summer deferral period, we will continue to pay the full cost of the generation at the new supply rate to electricity suppliers. To recover these credits, PSE&G will add $10 per month to each residential electric customer’s bill during the months of September 2025 through February 2026. PSE&G will forego any carrying costs (interest) for the credits given to customers during the summer months.

In addition, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) will re-launch the Residential Energy Assistance Payment (REAP) program. It will provide $175 in direct financial relief to eligible households through seven $25 payments in each month from August through February. There is no application process. These REAP payments will be applied automatically to the utility bills of those customers already enrolled in assistance programs.

Lastly, the BPU has approved enhancements to the Universal Service Fund (USF), including substantial increases in the minimum and maximum monthly credits. PSE&G will expand outreach efforts and partner with the state to help facilitate the application process.

What You Can Do To Manage Summer Energy Costs

It is important not to confuse increased electric rates with increased electric usage: summer months often coincide with high heat, frequently leading to increased electric usage as customers run their air conditioners more often. Regardless of electric rates, customers can take steps now to save energy and money. Learn about our energy efficiency programs, including the new FlexPower demand response program.
